Today, not many
malignancies have promising results as potential curative treatment modality.
Cure theoretically requires the total eradication of all malignant cells
from the patient's body. Therefore a variety of purging modalities have been
applied to the treatment of hematopoietic malignancies in order to deplete
residual malignant cells in patients. Many researches are trying to find the
magic bullet that will clear the body from malignant cells. Emerging evidence
indicates that cancer stem cells(CSC) can be target for the
initiation of the some of the hematological malignancies. Combining all these
fundamentals with the investigation of identified CSC, will lead to a
considerable increase in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms and
signaling pathways and are likely to provide key insights into more efficient
drug design and therapy.
Purified CSC, will
provide a powerful substrate for preclinical testing of the efficacy of newly
developed chemotherapeutic agents. Therefore, we will pursue the
characterization and identification of CSC. The aim of the project
is to identify the CSC phenotype that initiates the disease, understanding its
functional characteristics and exploring the potential effect of some
therapeutical options on malignant cells as a powerful treatment modality.
As a leading research
institute in Istanbul University Medical Faculty, we serve to the patients from
all around Turkey and have such big population of patients. The Institute has
very well established research training environment for researchers as well as
students. This project will not only enhance our scientific knowledge
also further help us to identify the some of the unknowns about the cancer stem
cells.
